Georgia Hood, a ceramic artist from Auckland, New Zealand, began her artistic journey in 2018 at Victoria University and Massey University of Wellington. She returned to Auckland in 2021 to complete her Honours degree in Fine Arts with a focus on Graphic Design at Whitecliffe College. It was during her final year of study that she started working with clay, dedicating the next three years to developing her identity in ceramic sculpture.
In January 2023, Georgia found a studio space at Studio One Toi Tū, equipped with two electric kilns. This studio allowed her to fire larger pieces and explore new sculpting techniques, glazes, and forms, steering her work in a fresh direction. A year later she adopted an earth-toned color palette featuring iron oxide, oxide-based shino, and satin glazes, which reflect the natural origins of the clay. This shift led to a more three-dimensional body of work, focusing on creating ornamental patterns with clay rather than using it as a base for sgraffito and painting with stained slip, her previous technique in 2023.
Her work was exhibited in the group show 'Pianola,' alongside painter Christian Dimick and photographer Samuel Scully. 'Pianola' highlighted their intuitive, childlike creativity. Georgia's bold shapes and organic lines captivate viewers with their metallic, yet tender strength.
This September, Georgia is set to embark on her first art residency in Heraklion, Crete, aiming
to further her career in ceramic arts.
